Players around the world have been struggling to connect to Diablo 2: Resurrected today, with servers going offline for hours at a time since early this morning. It’s causing some understandable frustration among the action RPG game’s fans, and Blizzard says it’s investigating the issue to determine what’s causing the server outages.

Diablo 2: Resurrected has been having server troubles throughout the weekend, particularly in the European region. Players reported login issues Saturday, which prompted Blizzard to perform emergency maintenance. More problems cropped up Sunday with Diablo 2: Resurrected authentication servers, which Blizzard said it had resolved after a few hours.
Speaking to EuroGamer today (October 12), Blizzard shared the following statement:“We are aware of and are investigating issues some players have been experiencing in Diablo 2: Resurrected. We have conducted emergency maintenance across all platforms, are closely monitoring server performance, and are making further adjustments and fixes as needed.”
Ironically, it seems that Blizzard's desire to maintain an authentic Diablo 2 experience in the remaster is a chief cause of all these headaches. One "legacy service" in particular handles critical functions including "game creation/joining, updating/reading/filtering game lists, verifying game server health, and reading characters from the database." It was upgraded and optimized for Diablo 2: Resurrected but is still rooted in 20-year-old tech, and it's having a difficult time keeping up with "modern player behavior."
Thankfully, Blizzard has a few plans to mitigate some of these problems. The first solution is to lock players out of creating new games if they create too many in a short period of time. Blizzard is calling this “rate limiting” and it will be communicated with an error message that says “there was an issue communicating with the game servers.” Another solution Blizzard is trying is a more aggressive queuing system that slows player logins to more of a trickle rather than a waterfall that might bring the whole game down.
Blizzard says that none of these solutions are necessarily permanent, and instead are mostly focused on preventing the game from crashing completely anytime in the near future. Instead, Blizzard’s more permanent solutions include breaking certain services out into their own separate system to help reduce the server load they create.
